It’s that time of year again – Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited for this holiday season! Thanksgiving comes along with cozy vibes, family get-togethers, way too much food, and of course, PIE. When you think about the traditional Thanksgiving pies, what comes to mind? My go-to delicious Thanksgiving pies are usually pumpkin (of course), apple, pecan, berry, and maybe a smooth pie like banana cream, chocolate, or key lime.
It’s easy to feel sort of stuck in a rut when it comes to pies – almost everyone does the same thing! There’s definitely something special to say about tradition, but if you’re feeling creative this year and want to try something new, you’ve come to the right place.
Here is a list of our favorite traditional AND unique pies you can make for your Thanksgiving feast this year!
Traditional
First, let’s start with traditional pies. These are crowd favorites – everyone knows and loves them. You really can’t go wrong with these Thanksgiving pies, so if you’re looking for a safe choice, these should work perfectly!
Pumpkin Pie
This is the classic pie. It’s rich, flavorful, and perfect for a cool autumn day. You really can’t go wrong with a traditional pumpkin pie – it’s sure to please everyone at your Thanksgiving feast!
Apple Pie
Another classic, apple pie is always a good choice. It’s sweet, tart, and absolutely delicious. If you’re looking for a change from pumpkin pie this year, an apple pie is a great option. Serve it with some vanilla bean ice cream and your dessert will be a real hit! I can almost taste that flaky crust now.
Berry Pie
Berry pies are perfect for summer or winter – they’re not too heavy but still offer a lot of flavor. I love using mixed berries and a buttery crust in my pies, but you can use any type of berry you like. Blackberry, raspberry, and strawberry are all great choices. Make it with a lattice top and you have yourself a beautiful, rich pie.
Banana Cream Pie
This is one of my personal favorites. It’s light, airy, and has the perfect sweetness – it’s just the best pie all around. If you want to really impress your guests, top it with some whipped cream and fresh berries. It’s sure to be a hit! Pro tip: I love to layer banana slices between the crust and pie filling for some extra flavor and texture.
Chocolate Pie
Who doesn’t love chocolate? This pie is rich, decadent, and perfect for any chocolate lovers out there. Serve it with a scoop of whipped cream on top and you’ll have everyone begging for more! This is a particularly great option if there are a lot of kids in the family, which is why it’s always on the list for best Thanksgiving pies.
Maple Pecan Pie
This is a Thanksgiving favorite for a reason – it’s absolutely delicious! Pecan pie is rich, nutty, and has the perfect sweetness. It’s definitely a crowd favorite, so if you’re looking for something tried and true, this hearty pie is the way to go. The flavor mixture of maple syrup, brown sugar, pecans, and butter is perfect. It’s also delicious served with caramel sauce on top.
Key Lime Pie
This pie is tart, sweet, and perfect for those who want something a little different. Key lime pie is refreshing and unique – it’s sure to stand out amongst all the other pies at your Thanksgiving feast! In my opinion, key lime pie is best with a graham cracker crust rather than a traditional pie crust.
Non-Traditional
If you’re feeling adventurous this year and want to try something new, we have some awesome recipes you can try. These are family-friendly, kid-tested, and delicious no matter how much you just ate for dinner! Here are our favorite non-traditional Thanksgiving pie recipes:
Strawberry Pie
This simple strawberry pie is a favorite at my house. It’s no-bake, has an easy cleanup, and can be adapted to fit pretty much any holiday – including Thanksgiving! This recipe may be geared toward the Fourth of July, but you can definitely serve it at your Thanksgiving table for a light, refreshing treat.
Sour Cream Raisin Pie
Okay – you might see the words “sour cream” and “raisin” in the same sentence and scroll by. But don’t knock it until you try it! This pie has a delicious oatmeal crust, the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and your little ones will absolutely love it.
Cherry Chocolate Pie
This is a super easy recipe that comes together in no time. It’s perfect for those who want something chocolatey without all the hassle. The best part? You can use canned cherry pie filling to make it even easier! This is an old favorite with a new twist in our family and goes perfectly with Thanksgiving dinner.
Frozen Lemonade Pie
This frozen lemonade pie is so good, especially if you’re looking for a light dessert after your heavy thanksgiving meal. This is the perfect make-ahead dessert too so you can freeze it beforehand!
Dirt and Worms Pudding Pie
This is another kid favorite! It always gets rave reviews with my kids and their friends. It’s basically a twist on the classic chocolate pie, but it has an Oreo crust, Oreo crumble on top, and gummy worms throughout the pie filling. Even though it’s geared more toward kids, the adults will love it too!
Slab Apple Pie
Looking for a twist on the classic apple pie? Try this easy slab apple pie! Serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you have the perfect Thanksgiving dessert. This is also a great apple pie recipe if you’re serving a big crowd – it makes a ton!
Chocolate Triple Berry Pie
This chocolate triple berry pie is the perfect mix of sweet, tart, and chocolatey. It has a delicious pastry crust, and the filling is made with mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries). You can use a store-bought crust to make things easier! I have found that frozen berries tend to work best for this recipe, but you can try using fresh as well! This pie is best served with a scoop of ice cream.
Caramel Apple Pecan Pie
This is a twist on the classic pecan pie, with a few added ingredients to make it even better. The apples and caramel take this pie to the next level, and it’s sure to be a hit with your guests! It has the perfect flavor for those who don’t love how sweet and rich traditional pecan pie is.
With these pie ideas, you’re sure to have a plethora of options when it comes time for the big day! No matter what your family enjoys, there’s a pie recipe here that will fit the bill. If you’re new to pie-making, you might want to do a few practice runs to make sure you get it down before you have to serve your pie to family and friends.
