Shaving is an ineveitable part of life for most women – but it can be made easier with a razor subscription service! Here is a side by side comparison of two popular ones – Billie versus Dollar Shave Club!
Subscription boxes are all the rage right now.
We’ve talked about our favorite subscription boxes in the past….ones for pregnant moms…ones for babies…ones for beauty aficionados and ones for snack addicts.
And today, I’m going to talk about another kind of a subscription box:
Razors for women.
I’ve known about the Dollar Shave Club for several years now, but I just heard about Billie the other day when they showed up as an ad in my Facebook feed (good job targeting those ads, Billie. It’s not easy to do!).
I was really intrigued by what Billie was offering, so I decided to order a kit. Since I know that Dollar Shave Club is popular, I figured it was a good time to try them out as well
This post is NOT sponsored in any way. My referral links are used, but my experience is my own. You are welcome to have your own opinion, but if it’s different than my own, that doesn’t mean I’m being paid. I have updated this post several times to make this comparison similar.Â
When placing my orders, I simply ordered what was offered when I went through the prompts on each website. That is how I ordered the products and subscriptions described below.Â
The Cost and Subscription
Both Billie and Dollar Shave Club offer different variations on their subscriptions. When I signed up with Billie, it asked how often I shave, and it calculated a subscription-based off of that.
Billie is $9 per month that you receive the subscription – so for me, I get a new package every three months with new cartridges. In your first package, you will receive:
- One razor
- Magnetic holder
- Two replacement cartridges
And each shipment (regardless of how often it is) will have four razor replacement cartridges in it. At $9 per shipment, I think that’s a pretty great deal. They also offer a shaving cream (more on that in a bit), a body wash, and body lotion, which you can add for an additional cost.
How often you shave will determine how often you need to order. Billie recommends changing the blade every seven shaves.
So if you shave twice a week, that would be a new blade every three weeks. You could then get away with ordering once every three months. Obviously, this could change depending on how much you shave, so it could be a better or worse value depending on that.
But based on ordering once every three months, that amounts to be $3 a month.
I ordered a shaving cream with mine, so that is why that was included with my subscription. But that is totally optional.
With the Dollar Shave Club, you can start your subscription for just $5, which includes your razor, four replacement blades, and a travel size shaving butter (which is a decent size) for just $5, which is a great price.
However, each time after that, it will be $24.70 to get eight replacement cartridges and shaving butter. You can remove the shave butter to make it less, and it ends up being about $16.
Dollar Shave Club recommends getting that same amount shipped every 3-4 months.
Here are a couple pricing scenarios:
- Eight cartridges and shave butter – $24.70; divided over three months, and this ends up being $8.23 a month
- Eight cartridges and shave butter – $24.70; divided over four months, and this ends up being $6.18 a month
- Eight cartridges; no shave butter – $16; divided over three months and this ends up being $5.33 a month
- Eight cartridges; no shave butter – $16; divided over three months and this ends up being $4 a month
Here is a screenshot of the exact plan I am looking at that quotes the $24.70 above since I have been getting comments saying I wasn’t giving accurate numbers 🙂 This is what was given to me by default.
It’s hard to compare the pricing as apples to apples, since they include different amounts of razors and have different recommended switch out periods. A lot of this will depend on how frequently you shave.
Neither of these companies requires a contract, and you can cancel at any time – it’s very easy to do through the website.
My main gripe with Billie was that it didn’t create me an account when I signed up for my subscription. I accidentally did two subscriptions, which was a tad bit annoying! But as soon as I created an account, both of them were connected to it, and I was easily able to cancel one
The Razor
The razors from both Billie and Dollar Shave Club have some similarities – but they are definitely very different overall.
DSC Razor –
- This razor is quite heavy – I don’t think I’ve ever had a manual razor that is so heavy before! It definitely feels like it was built to last.
- It is sturdy and easy to grip
- It also doesn’t look very feminine at all – which isn’t that big of a deal. But I definitely felt like I was using a man’s razor. Dollar Shave Club prides themselves in making a razor that both men and women can use – and they can! However, it definitely leans more toward the male side of things in my opinion.
- It has a thin moisturizing strip at the top, though I honestly didn’t realize what it was at first because it isn’t like the built-in moisturizing strips most razors I’m used to having with my razors.
- I felt like it was a bit clunky to move around like it wasn’t meant to go around curves or large areas.
- Six blades
Billie
- I really loved the look and feel of this razor. It felt good in my hands, and it was easy to use.
- Very lightweight
- The razors are nestled in smooth aloe shave soap, which makes for a very smooth shave
- Rounded edges also help it to be more comfortable
- It came with a magnetic razor holder, but this was so confusing to me. I could not get it to stay up! It kept falling off the wall no matter what I did, so I just got rid of it.
**UPDATE – After just a couple of weeks, my razor from Billie started to rust all over the blades. This has definitely been concerning to me, and since then, I have switched to primarily using my DSC razor for the time being, which I have liked more than more I use it. I still prefer the feel of the Billie. Both razors were stored the same way, and the DSC one has not rusted**
**UPDATE #2 – Apparently I wasn’t the only one who had issues with the rusting at Billie. They recently updated their blades to be charcoal based, which supposedly helps with rusting. I am getting these new blades soon, and I will update as soon as I can!**
The Shave Cream
The Dollar Shave Club includes a travel-sized sample of their shave cream with their $5 starter pack. Billie doesn’t include shave cream in their $9 subscription, so it’s about $8 to add it on. They do include a free single use sample though with your first order.
However, I still wanted to compare the two. I’ll admit that I don’t always use shaving cream because I’m lazy…but it definitely makes a difference when I do 🙂 I know most women do, though, so hopefully this will help you decide which one you will want to use.
Dollar Shave Club –Â this shaving cream definitely felt more like an oil. I didn’t feel like it lathered up at all, and it seemed to rinse away pretty quickly. However, even though it didn’t lather up, it did seem to get the job done, and it helped achieve a more smooth shave.
The main issue I had with it was the smell – I did NOT like it at all. It smells a bit too “masculine” for me – a bit like a cologne or a men’s aftershave. This may just be a personal preference – I tend to prefer more floral or fruity scents. I just didn’t like it.
Billie – This shaving cream definitely lathered up, which I do like, and it was more creamy than oily. I don’t know what it is, but I just feel more confident when things lather up. Haha. I absolutely loved the smell! Very pleasant, yet not overpowering.
I feel like they both did about the same job assisting in the shaving job. I think it really just comes down to the smell and texture.
The Experience
When it comes to the experience, I felt like they were both pretty similar. The Dollar Shave Club razor seemed to just *barely* have the edge on the closeness of the shave. I felt like the DSC razor was better for smaller areas – like around my knees – and I felt like on larger areas – like my calves and thigh – I ended up with a little bit of razor burn.
The Billie razor seemed to be the opposite – good for larger areas, but my knees got some razor burn.
A few days after shaving, I compared hair regrowth, and I would say that the leg and armpit that I used the DSC on seems to have less growth (so that lines up with getting a little bit of a closer shave).
I shaved with both razors at the same time, just to compare the feeling more easily. I felt like the DSC razor just felt kind of rough. I can’t really explain it – but I didn’t like the feeling at all. With Billie, I could barely even feel the razor as I used it, which is what I like. In the end, that little test is why I decided that Billie was my favorite.
Billie or DSC – What Should You Choose?
I think it’s pretty obvious that Billie is the company I personally liked the most – except for the rusting issue. With that said, I think they both offer a good product – it just depends on what you want.
Billie is designed specifically for women – the razors are designed with a woman’s unique shaving needs in mind, and I definitely felt like the razor worked much better with me than Dollar Shave Club.
Dollar Shave Club is supposed to be unisex, and it is. I was able to use the razor without any major issues. However, at the end of the day, I really kind of felt like I was shaving with a man’s razor. I felt like the shave cream was more like a male after-shave as well.
Like I said above, I did feel like the DSC did provide a closer shave, and I didn’t have to shave as frequently. But for the most part, I think that Billie offers a more comfortable shave and better value.
If you are a man, though, I think I would definitely choose DSC 🙂
All in all, though, I would recommend you try both out to see what YOU like the most.

They changed the razors a bit since your review for Billie. I have not had issues with that with mine and I have had he same blade on for 3 weeks used every other day. As for the magnetic holder, I have textured tile and it stuck to mine and has not fallen down. I cleaned the area first and pressed hard for like 20 sec when I put it on the tile. It ya stayed up since last fall.

Good to know! I have another shipment coming, so when I try those, I’ll update my review.

I’ve been a DSC customer for a couple years and I have the most expensive razor and blades, and it’s only $9 a month. I don’t know where you got the $16 price from, but that’s incorrect. I even logged out of my account to make sure I wasn’t grandfathered into a lower price, but even then the price is still showing $9/mo for executive blades, and $6/mo for the cheaper ones.
Have you tried out flamingo? I’m curious to see how it compares to Billie.
Katie says
I don’t know where the price difference comes in, but I was not incorrect at the time of my ordering. I looked at the site several times. Believe me, if I was trying to be biased, I would have made DSC look a lot better, because I actually get paid when people sign up under those links. It is weird though! I have not tried Flamingo, but I’ll look into that ASAP and do a review.

Has anyone else experienced this rust issue w/Billie as well(?!) because I was literally about to buy in to it until I read that part… before that I was reading her review like YAS now I KNOW I wasn’t just being prissy, it’s a real thing(!!) meaning- I felt exactly the same about DSC – that it didn’t move well with feminine curves and so ultimately was not an overall satisfying result so I cancelled my refills before they came. But then again, I too also LOVED the weight of the handle. It really does feel like it’s made to last and in general way more well made than anything you’ll get out there (esp for 5 bucks!!) but it just never felt comfy or like I was holding MY razor. It was so hard to hold the d@mn thing to shave my bikini area that I couldn’t really accomplish shaving my curvy bits unless I held it upside down & gripped it by the outside of the blade head so I knew it wouldn’t slip and create a bigger issue!! Yeah, see what I’m sayin? Does that sound fun? No. Comfy ease of frequent bikini shaving w/out flesh wounds is a must for me (umm everyone lol).. But I could just never get comfortable holding the handle normal, very aggravating so I cancelled my subscription but now I’m at a loss for what to do and it’s past time for a cartridge lol. Besides the awkwardness the DSC shave result WAS superior to ANY store bought razors I’ve used. I saw Billie and was like omg, maybe THIS is it then, BUT who wants a razor that is going to rust 2 weeks??? And another huge selling point was the supposed oh-so-nifty magnet holder that she says wouldn’t even stay on the wall & she ended up tossing? WTH? That’s no good either!! Sounds like the overall design of their system is lacking in reliability besides the aloe encased rounded blade heads and just gah HALP someone??!!! PS great detailed review she gave !!!
Katie says
Hi, Lisa! Glad you enjoyed this review 🙂 The magnetic thing not working really irked me – because that’s what I was looking forward to most! I hope they come up with a better way for it to stick. It just comes with some putty, and it does not work well. As far as the rusting goes, if you are able to keep it dry and make sure to remember to put the cover back on, I would *hope* it would prevent rust better. I always forget to put mine back on, though the DSC didn’t rust either way. Anyways, I hope someone else can chime in. Because I think it is a better-designed razor for a woman!

I have been a DSC member for about a year. I have loved them, but I have had problems with my razor breaking (it’s kinda my fault because they keep falling). I have been wanting to try something new for a while, but I haven’t known of anything else. Until recently. A friend of mine posted about Billie and how she loves it (and the shaving cream). So I jumped on the bandwagon. I just ordered my first package, and I’m extremely excited. I’ll update on my opinion!
Katie says
Yes! Please keep me updated with your thoughts. I can’t wait to hear what you think – I think others will appreciate learning about it, too.
Halie Finke says
I have DSC and I get the 4x razor, which is the midline razor they market as their true unisex razor, because it has a moveable head to better navigate knees and ankles. I subscribe to $6 every other month to receive the 4 head replacements, and you can cancel your shipment as much as you want if you find yourself accumulating razorheads like I was. It really is cheaper than Billie, or the same price if you get the Executive razor, which is what the author got here, because replacements for the executive is $9 per month/order.
Stephanie says
This felt biased. I don’t pay that much for my DSC…you must have gotten the more expensive package, which really ain’t comparing apples to apples. And the handle for Billie is much cheaper than DSC.
Katie says
Well, it’s not. I assure you, it wasn’t paid for by either companies, and it was based entirely on my experience. Everyone has different preferences, I suppose!
Katie says
And I got the least expensive package they were offering at the time. Perhaps you were grandfathered into another pack or you got it on special pricing? Who knows. The DSC handle is definitely more sturdy – and I mention that it is heavier and built to last. Sorry, you think I’m lying! Because I was 100% genuine in this review <3
Halie Finke says
I think what happened was you got the promoted starter kit. If you clicked on their menu and then the blades section under ‘Our Products,’ you have the option to order just the razor with nothing else. The starter pack is the handle with 4 razorheads. And then it’s just $9 for every replacement order. If you get the 4x razor, which is more unisex than the Executive (what you got), it’s only $6 for the replacement order. It’s really a flaw in their website design that it’s not easier to see the razor options, but I’ve been using the 4x for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it, it gets around the knees and the ankles flawlessly and the shave is so smooth. I have really sensitive skin too, and I hardly ever get razorburn with the 4x.
Katie says
Thank you so much for your detailed and respectful response! I will definitely look into this and update my post 🙂
Maria says
LOL seriously? She did an impartial review and picked the one she liked better. And she said the Billie razor rusted after a couple of weeks – that sounds like bias to you?
I don’t subscribe to either service, and I looked at both. Both services present you with a starter kit and restock service, and the prices match exactly what’s stated in the review. There is no readily apparent option to select either a cheaper or more expensive option. Maybe you should look for yourself so you understand a little bit better, and then you can apologize for baselessly accusing someone of bias.
Katie says
Thank you, Maria. I appreciate your comment 🙂
