Mandrake Harry Potter

We are officially a family of five, just in time for Halloween.

As in years past, we came up with a themed costume for our family to be. I figure I won’t be able to convince my boys to do this forever, so I may as well enjoy it while it lasts…even when I feel like maybe I’ll skip a year!

Last year, I wrote a post about the best Halloween costumes for a family of four…and many of these would work for a family of five as well.

This year, we decided to go with Harry Potter. Forrest and I both are Harry Potter fans, so when Jack expressed a desire to read Harry Potter this last year, we were pretty excited (though we cut him off after Book Three for the time being).

So it made sense to do Harry Potter this year! There’s plenty of characters to go around.

Jack called dibs on Harry Potter, and he convinced Oliver to be Ron. I went with the classic Hermione, and Forrest is still deciding between Hagrid or Snape (it will largely depend on what he finds at Goodwill).

For baby Andrew, we felt like he should either be Dobby or a Mandrake…and we finally settled on Mandrake.

I searched online for costume ideas, and I kept coming across this Mandrake warning sign. I believe that this is the original creator of the sign.

I recreated the sign so I could use it in Design Space, so I could use Infusible Ink to put it onto a onesie for Andrew.

Anyways, I also ordered a Mandrake crocheted hat from Etsy. You could make one, as well, if you are talented in the crocheting department – but I am not.

We bought a large terra cotta pot as well and put a blanket in it. Andrew can’t hold himself up at all, so we just got that for pictures 🙂

I was so excited with how it turned out. I think he’s a pretty cute little Mandrake.

So if you are interested in making your own baby Mandrake costume, here is a synopsis of what I bought. If you have a Cricut and want to make it using Infusible Ink or iron-on vinyl…read on after that for a little tutorial 🙂

Baby Mandrake Costume

–Mandrake crocheted hat. I bought THIS one from Etsy, and I was so happy with how it turned out. We got the light brown one, which is pictured above. It was $15, which I felt was very reasonable. If you want to crochet your own, here is a great crochet pattern for a mandrake hat.

–For the onesie, I used a Cricut Infusible Ink Bodysuit and then I used a black Infusible Ink pen – the .4 size. I used the file I created to put it onto the shirt – you could also use heat transfer vinyl. I have seen some people put this onto a pot instead, but I thought the shirt works well. –Large terra-cotta pot – you can buy these at Walmart, Home Depot, many craft stores, and on Amazon!

–Ear Muffs – I am planning on having ear muffs for us to wear with our costumes.

Easy as pie! Such a cute and fun costume for a baby!

So if you are wanting to make this using Infusible Ink, here’s how I did it:

Harry Potter Mandrake

MATERIALS

Mandrake SVG
Cricut Infusible Ink Body Suit (Cricut / Amazon)
Black Infusible Ink Fine Point Pen – .4 (Cricut / Amazon)
Laser copy paper
LightGrip Cutting Mat (I know I used the StandardGrip, but it was way too sticky!).
EasyPress 2 (Cricut / Amazon)
EasyPress mat (Cricut / Amazon)
Cardstock

INSTRUCTIONS

Open up the Mandrake sign download in Design Space – you can use the SVG or JPG file that you downloaded above.
Upload the file into Design Space. Select “draw” as the line type.
Press make it. Make sure you have mirrored your design.
Select copy paper for the material.
Place a piece of copy paper onto a LightGrip mat. Load into your Cricut machine.
Put the pen into the tool holder in your Explore Air 2 or Maker.
Press go and let the pen do its magic.
After it’s done, carefully remove from the mat.
Color in any area with the pen that you want. I just colored in the earmuffs.
Put cardstock inside the shirt.
Set your EasyPress 2 to 385 degrees.
While it heats up, preheat your shirt for 5-10 seconds.
Place your design on the shirt face down.
Put the sheets of freezer paper on top of the design.
Using your EasyPress 2, press down firmly on the bodysuit for 45 seconds.
Remove the freezer sheets and carefully peel up the copy paper. Be careful, it will be hot!
