Hairitage is a new budget-friendly line of hair care products that were recently launched at Walmart by Mindy McKnight. They boast of being clean and natural – but is it Curly Girl Approved? Here is what you need to know, plus my experience.
I know quite a few Utah influencers, so it’s no surprise that I saw many of them talking about the launch of Mindy McKnight’s new haircare line.
If you don’t know who Mindy McKnight is the creator behind Cute Girl Hairstyles, which has saved moms everywhere when it comes to styling their girl’s hair!
And if you have teens and tweens, you might be familiar with her daughters – Brooklyn and Bailey (I absolutely LOVE the mascara their company sells).
While I don’t personally know Mindy, I have admired her from afar with everything she has done. I once attended a conference session where she and her husband spoke, and I was so impressed with their integrity and passion.
ANYWAYS. Mindy recently launched a new haircare line with Walmart, and I’ve been super intrigued by it.
It’s called Hairitage.
Every item is just $7.94. The tagline is “Clean and natural hair care products for everyone and every family!”
Over the past year or so, I’ve been really cleaning up the products I use on my body and in my house, so when I heard about an affordable line like this – I get super excited.
Because I saw that it was specifically targeting wavies/curlies for some of the products, I decided to take a closer look. Last year, I wrote my budget-friendly guide to Curly Girl for wavy hair, so I’m always looking for new products that might fit the bill for that.
The Curly Girl Method has some pretty strict regulations, and while I’m the first to admit that I’m no purist – I run a Facebook group all about this method for wavy-haired people, so I thought it would be worth looking into.
I’m always up for an experiment, so I just purchased some of the items and tried them out. I have only used them once, but I will update this later with more of my experience. For my initial thoughts, scroll to the bottom of this post.
I tested a conditioner, shampoo, and gel from this line against my Not Your Mother’s Natural shampoo and conditioner, as well as Aussie Instant Freeze gel.
ANYWAYS. I went through all of the products that are available from this line and put their ingredients through curlsbot to determine which items would be considered Curly Girl friendly. I do suggest looking at the ingredients yourself to verify this information.
Not all of them are, so I hope that this will be helpful. If I put something under the Non-CG method approved list, it’s not because I think it’s a terrible product. It just doesn’t fit the requirements, so those who strictly follow Curly Girl probably won’t want to follow it.
First, I am going to share what products they have specifically targeted toward wavy, curly, and coily hair – and whether or not they are Curly Girl approved. I will put more details at the end of this post for why some of them are not approved.

There was just one item on this list. Basically, curlsbot labels it as questionable because people debate on the ingredient in question.

My Experience
I thought I would try out the products that were curly girl approved so I could give my first-hand experience.
I have to give the disclaimer that since I was pregnant, I’ve been a fair-weather curly girl follower. I was exhausted, and I just kind of gave up on doing much. I’ve been trying to get back into it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t straighten my hair a little more frequently than I should – so my hair probably isn’t in the best “shape” for this experiment (aka, not as wavy as it could be).
For reference, here are the products I use most often:
- Not Your Mother’s Natural Shampoo and Conditioner (in the pink bottle)
- Aussie Instant Freeze
Keep in mind that I know that most of the time, shampoo is not suggested for the Curly Girl Method. However, most wavies will attest to the fact that a shampoo is definitely needed every now and again – which is why I use the shampoo.
I also used the Hairitage To The Max – Maximum Hold Styling Gel, even though that was technically a “curly” hair recommendation.
I started out my hair washing with the ACV wash. I REALLY liked it. I actually liked the smell of it, and it was pretty mild. I feel like it was a great addition to my routine that I will be using every now and then.
I felt like the shampoo and conditioner were very lightweight – I didn’t feel like they were greasy or weighed my hair down at all (which has happened with a lot of products I have tried in the past).
The shampoo definitely doesn’t lather up much – so just keep that in mind. It’s meant to be more of a conditioning shampoo.
The smell of the shampoo and conditioner didn’t seem too overpowering, but as I’ve been sitting here, the after-effects been a little bit much for me to handle!
I was most nervous about the hair gel. It looked a little weird, and it just didn’t seem like something that would work very well.
I was wrong! My hair LOVED it. My hair felt so soft after I used it, and I felt like it did such a nice job with my waves. My husband even looked at me after my hair had dried and said, “I think those products made your hair curlier!”
Overall, I think this is a great option. It’s very affordable, and it seems to work well. I don’t love the smell of everything while my hair is drying, but that’s okay.
If you are looking for some more budget-friendly products, this is definitely a line to consider. The shampoo and conditioner are similar in price to what I pay for NYMN at Target (it’s a lot more at Walmart, I noticed!), so I feel like I could easily use these.

HI KATIE,
I READ YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE CURLY HAIR PRODUCTS.. I DID PURCHASE AND USING TOMAORROW.
MY QUESTIONS IS WHAT ON THE BOTTLES DESCRIBES THE INGREDIENT SILICONES.
THANK YOU FOR THE ADVISE
Katie says
Hi! Anything that has “cone” is considered a silicone 🙂
Michelle Rossi says
Ahead of the curl curl creme has ALCOHOL. ITS THE SECIND INGREDIENT. The purple shampoo brags being “gluten free” but has ALCHOHOL. This lady is a crackpot.
This line sucks.
Katie says
It contains cetearyl alcohol, which is one of the few CGM approved alcohols. Sorry you didn’t have a good experience!
