Curious about the best things to buy at the Dollar Tree? Wondering what Dollar Tree products to avoid? Here are 45+ Dollar tree items that our family LOVES (as well as a few things we’ve found to be duds).
Best Things to Buy at the Dollar Tree
I can’t go more than a few weeks without writing another post about the Dollar Tree – I’m a little obsessed!
But, it seems like I’m in good company, because so many of YOU seem to be just as big of fans.
One of the hard things about the Dollar Tree is knowing what products are actually a good find, and while products, are, well, worth a dollar (or less).
I will say that I’m a little more hesitant to buy off brands from the Dollar Tree – but fortunately, they carry MANY brand name products for great prices.
So, I thought I’d share a few of the times that either I LOVE, or that I’ve been told is amazing. I recently did a survey on Facebook about this very topic, so I’m excited to share these with you (as well as a few items that I’ve found to be junk!).
Make sure to let me know what I may have missed!

What to Buy at the Dollar Tree
1) Bubbles
We bought our boys some of these for Christmas, and I am AMAZED at how good they are. I’m sure there are different kinds of bubbles there, but these were the Spiderman ones (it says Powered by Miracle Bubble). I believe it’s these licensed character bubbles. Bubbles for days!
2) Greeting Cards
This is one of the #1 things people recommended from the Dollar Tree, and I have to agree. Greeting cards are other stores are getting more and more expensive – it is crazy. There are some really weird ones at the Dollar Tree, but you can find a lot of really nice ones, too.
3) Socks
I especially love the fuzzy socks!
4) Sharpies
5) Floss Picks
I have actually heard that a lot of doctor’s offices get pregnancy tests from the Dollar Tree. It may not write out the words “pregnant” for you, but it gets the job done. You can start saving for baby by buying these!
7) Bag Clips
My mom loves these little metal bag clips that you can buy at the Dollar Tree. Perfect for chips!
My mom said that she sometimes has a hard time finding these, but when they are in stock, you should stock up!
9) Soaps
The Dollar Tree has lots of kinds of soap – liquid hand soap, bars of soap, dish soap…it’s all great!
10) Foam board
Now, most of you probably have no use for foam board, but it’s rather popular for bloggers. While it’s several dollars at most other stores, you can get white and black (sometimes) for just $1.
11) Parchment Paper
12) Wrapping Paper
The rolls aren’t that huge, but they have some cute prints. I found that one roll wrapped about 4-5 medium sized presents this Christmas.
13) Balloons
The helium balloons are hard to beat. However, one of the Dollar Trees near our old house hardly had ANY in stock. I’ve found that most normally do, but I would call ahead if you are looking for something super specific.
14) Glow Sticks
We love glow sticks at the Dollar Tree! They have so many different kinds – necklaces, bracelets, wands, glasses….my boys love these.
15) Vases
One reader said that she got a great deal on vases for a wedding. I recently looked at the vases at the Dollar Tree, and they seem to be pretty good quality!
17) Q-Tips
18) Craft Supplies (pom poms, glitter, etc.).
19) Tissue Paper
20) Poster Board
21) Toothbrushes
22) Toothpaste
While I had several people recommend this, one person said she heard it wasn’t very good. I think if you stick to the name brands that are sold, you should be okay though!
23) Netty Pot
24) Scotch Tape
Two packs for one dollar – we loved these at Christmas time!
27) Saran Wrap
28) Gift Bags
My mom said she wasn’t a big fan of the BIG gift bags. However, I like most of the gift bags I’ve gotten there. I think the baby shower ones are especially cute.
29) Packs of Thank you cards
30) Activity and Coloring Books for Kids
31) Aluminum Pans
These are great for freezer meals, taking dinner to other people, etc.
32) Picture Frames
They are pretty cheap, but this is where we buy most of our frames! Picture frames can be so expensive! They have a wide variety, as well.
33) Candy for Movies
You know those boxes of candy they sometimes sell at the movie theater for like $5? Just stop by the Dollar Tree first and pick up a few boxes for $1 a box. Much better deal!
34) Candy Bars
When I was talking to my mom, I mentioned that I didn’t think candy bars were very good deals here. She said, “Are you serious? Candy bars are often more than $1 nowadays.” I guess I don’t buy a lot of candy bars! But they do have a large variety of full-size candy bars (as well as the little strips of miniature ones).
35) Spices
36) Reading Glasses
This one kind of blew my mind. I had no idea you could buy glasses at the Dollar Tree. However, a lot of people recommended them, so I decided to check them out. And guess what? They seem to be great quality!
37) Dishes
I’ve bought a few different dishes from the Dollar Tree. Some of them break easily, but for the most part, I’ve been pretty pleased with them.
38) Ibuprofen and other medications
39) Stocking Stuffers/Goodie Bag Items
40) Holiday Products – check our posts on Dollar Tree Christmas and Dollar Tree Halloween ideas.
41) Air Fresheners
42) Solar Powered Decorations
Forrest and I LOVE these. They have them for almost all the holidays, and they are super cute. We look forward to getting them with each holiday. (I actually just saw they have solar powered garden lights. Super excited to try these out!).
43) Party Supplies
The Dollar Tree is definitely my go-to place for party supplies (they are great for baby showers, kid parties, as well as for getting table cloths, paper plates and plastic forks, etc.).
45) Ribbon
46) Makeup
I say this with a caveat – the brands you recognize are good. If you don’t recognize them…I would probably shy away.
Five Things to Avoid at the Dollar Tree
1) Toys
Okay, not all the toys at the Dollar Tree are bad. We like the little cars. However, for the most part, I find most of them to be just kind of junky. You just have to be careful (but in all honesty, it’s a dollar, and the kiddos might like it). Just don’t be too disappointed if something doesn’t work the way it should.
My mom bought some little toy phones at the Dollar Tree once. They work, but you can’t tell at all what they are saying. It kind of makes me laugh – one of them really sounds like it says “mama milk.”
2) Batteries
Just go to Costco instead and buy their batteries. Dollar Tree batteries really don’t last long.
3) Truffles
This was a suggestion from my mom – she said that she has bought many truffles there that have been smooshed or otherwise unappealing. We bought some at Christmas, and they certainly left something to be desired.
4) Plastic Kitchen Tools
I like a lot of their kitchen supplies, but many of the plastic kitchen utensils do not stand the test of time!
5) Spray Bottles
This is another suggestion from my mom – she said they leak really easily.
6) Crayons
This is one I’ve heard from many people, and I agree. They just don’t color very well, and you can get better quality crayons for around the same price at Walmart or Target.
7) Cleaning Supplies with Nozzles
Once again, another suggestion from my mom. She said that these often stop working, and she doesn’t feel they are worth buying.
8) Electronics
Just say no to Dollar Store Electronics.
9) Tools and Knives
These are things worth investing in. They don’t last very long when you buy them from the Dollar Tree.

Dollar Tree is my go to store for cards, ballons,Tin foil baking pans, gift bags and plastic containers.Great products.
Joanne says
I never buy cheap Q-tips, I had one fall off in my ear….
but all your other suggestions are spot on!! I never leave a Disney gift bag in the store, I buy any I see!!! Kids love getting a present on them!! Thanks…
LindaW says
I agree on the bad q-tips. I also try to avoid single use plastics. The stick part has to be paper or wood.
Condo Blues says
I make almost all of my own cleaners and air freshener spray for the bathroom and once my repurposed spray bottles bit the dust, I replaced them with spray bottles from Dollar Tree. They work just as well as the bottles they replaced. I’ve never had a problem with them although just like the predecessors the spray trigger will eventually spot working after 5 to 10 years
Dorota says
In Calgary the Dollar Store is just the name everything is more than a dollar
Katie says
That’s a bummer!
Gloria says
Hi, what about hand soap?
Katie says
Name brand is a good buy here. I haven’t bought any of the off brand hand soap though 🙂
Dave says
Box candy and outdoor solar lights at wal-Mart are 97 cents each can’t beat cards , black olives or office stuff at dollar tree
Ellie says
Great post! I love Dollar Tree, I almost always stop there first on my grocery shopping day. I get a lot of the things there that were mentioned.
Some other good finds I try to get there are:
*napkins
*tortillas
*lime and lemon juice
*coconut milk
*olives
*pesto
The downside of Dollar Tree is that they sometimes switch around what they offer and not all stores carry the same things, but you can always find at least some good deals there. 🙂
Deborah Miedema says
I LOVE Dollar Tree and go there almost weekly! I go down every aisle to check out what’s new. I am a paper crafter and get tons of stuff there. Love their foil (poster board) that embosses and diecuts nicely. Love their Christmas stuff and I stock up on gift bags, ornaments, and tape. But I don’t like their tree skirts; too small at 18 to 20″. I like their dishwasher pods, dryer sheets and dog treats. Love their fuzzy socks too! Some great brand names too!
Jacqueline R says
I bought the Reynolds tin foil there and will never buy it again! Very flimsy and thin. You can tell how light the box is when you pick it up!
I buy the kitchen itensils no problem.
Also I bought all my christmas wrapping paper there.
I was lucky to find large beer mugs that I use for the times I want a nice big glass of something cold!
I buy the aluminum containers and the betty crocker foid storage containers.
The greeting cards are an awesome buy and if you look around you will notice they carry the major lines (Halmark etc).
Love dollar tree!
April says
When getting my first apartment I bought some cleaning supplies from dollar tree, while I agree that not all are very good the all purpose cleaner spray bottle they sell is one of my favorite cleaning products. 5 years later and I’m still using it. Works great with cleaning and getting dirt/ grime/ stains up and I’ve luckily not had a problem with the spray nozzle not working and for a dollar the bottle seems to last me forever. If looking for a good cheap product I would recommend this one!
Misti says
I agree with you recommendations on everything except Scotch tape. You can get 3 rolls at Walmart for 2.97 and the rolls have 3-4 times as much tape per roll. Thanks for the great post!
MaryLynn Tritten says
We like to buy Garlic bread from the cooler section at Dollar Tree. I’m a teacher so I buy a lot of craft items and decorations for my classroom.
Val says
I buy all my cleaning supplies at Dollar Tree. The Awesom cleaners are absolutely the best cleaners for a buck!! Our dolllar tree resentfully started carrying frozen foods and refrigerated stuff, like bacon, single slice pies, breakfast sausage—when you live alone these are super saving items
Kathy says
I agree!! I am a housekeeper and I absolutely love the Awesome brand degreasers. That little bottle is great for all greasy stains (even clothes) and stoves. The Oxygen Orange cleaner is great in bathrooms for soap scum and all over house. And that lets not forget you can get the refill bottles for a $1 too.
Loretta says
I go to the Dollar Tree to get the beef and chicken broth in the 32 oz container. I can’t tell the difference between that and the one you pay 2.89 for at Winn Dixie. just watch the expiration date on the top of the carton
Cyn says
This is my trick too! You just Cannot beat that deal & they even carry a lower sodium option!
Janette says
I buy batteries there. Just have to make sure AND get the alkaline batteries and not heavy duty ones. They last longer! I use them for work with no problem.
Tess says
The only thing a disagree on is that the tools are a bad buy. Right they don’t hold up like good ones but you can make a great starter kit for kids and it’s handy to have screwdrivers on every floor of the house. lol Or in the car door pocket. In a pinch they’re fine and handy extras.
Becky A says
I buy the 9v batteries for our smoke detector because we change the every 6 months. Never had an issue with them. I do agree for other types that Costco is the place.
Starla Raby says
i use a degreaser i buy from the dollar tree. it is best stuff, but i make sure i buy the concentrated. works great, you gotta try it! oven cleaner is great for so many things and for a dollar works just as well as any other. i agree with the above mentioned things you have talked about, thank you very much!!!
Jani says
Thank you so much honey for all the great information!! I know it must have taken a long time to gather that much useful info together. One thing I wanted to mention – there are many things in that store- from veggies to makeup – that have expiration dates. Be sure to check. I’ve been burned more than once. A week or two is one thing but 6 months is too long!!
Katie says
Thank you, Jani! And that is a great tip 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Paula says
Thanks for all the info. However be wary of the parchment paper. I buy it to make cookies on and when I bought the Dollar Tree brand all the cookies stuck
Bee says
There cleaner “Awesome” is just that. Great spot remover, degreaser and all around cleaner. Just remember to use in open space or with open windows. Kind of makes you cough if too close.
Holly says
My eye doctor told me that if my insurance didn’t pay for reading glasses from his office I could get them from anywhere but dollar tree. He said they are defective and would hurt my eyes. Wal-Mart, dollar General etc are fine. By the way I am a 2-3 times a week dollar tree shopper.
Katie says
Good to know!
Lx says
You can actually get way more than a two tapes for a doller. You can find the dispensers and dispenser packs that have abort six or eight rolls or tape.
Cristina says
Love this post. The only disagreement tjat i have is about the socks, since Id had bought some and after the first washed they shrinked. Other than that I love pretty much everything. Course with some exception!!
Brittany says
Another thing that’s good from the Dollar store is Nature’s Own Bread….(honey wheat, wheat, white, butter). Nature’s Own can cost between $2-3 at Walmart or any other grocery store. They switch up every week with other name brand breads. Also, I’ve used blueberries from there, they are frozen, but if you know how to get down in the kitchen you can make it work. I’ve also brought hot pockets, veggie burger patties, pimento cheese, cheese puffs, the gourmet pretzels(grocery store price $2.50), ocean spray cranberry grape. All that being said, there are many other food items that are good there. There are some things that I myself wouldn’t even try. Like the weird off brand drinks!! My husband is one of those people who will try and like everything but me “NO MA’am”. I can say specifically though…..DO NOT BUY THE SYRUP!!! Syrup is one of those things you just have to buy the Name brand!! I just love the dollar tree. I host a lot of parties(bridal shower, Baby shower, birthday, etc) and when it comes to decorating, games, party gifts…..that’s MY one stop party shop!!!?
Debra says
Do not, I repeat do not buy q-tips from the Dollar Tree. My use of them resulted in a visit to my doctor where he had to dig out the tip that got lodged in my ear.
Amy says
Great list! There are definitely some good bargains to be had at the dollar store!
Tammy S. says
Loved this post! I like the little storage bins at Dollar Tree. I organized under my kitchen sink for less than $5. I also bought a small colander that works great! I would agree cards there are are pretty good. I’m careful with the small gift bags as they are a bit flimsy, but work well with items not too heavy. Overall, you can’t beat a dollar!
Lynn Dudley says
I often shop at Dollar Tree for colgate toothpaste, Betty Crocker plastic covered containers, just-like the expensive “eraser” sponge (2 for $1), clarifying shampoo, greeting cards, and so many other items I use all the time. Yes, I might have a few disappointments along the way….but those great deals outweigh the few that don’t work for me.
Kathy Edwards says
Thanks for your list. I am a teacher and the tools are WONDERFUL for my classroom. No heavy use, but great to have on hand. For the price if someone borrows and forgets to return I can replace with no hard feelings. Dollar Tree is a lifesaver for teachers. I agree usually toys are not the best, but every once in awhile there are good toys like hot wheels or character items. Use common sense.
Jessica says
I got a rubber mallet from DT a few years ago and it works great for camping. Also the pill cutters work great if you can find them in stock. It would be nice if my brother would stop loosing mine. And the spices are a good deal. They used to be a whole lot better of a deal. Now they are smaller. And you can get 3L sodas there too.
Alice says
I buy picture frames from the Dollar store and spray paint them different colrs if they don’t have the colors I need. I have two artist friends that send Christmas cards they made. I frame them and have them throughout the house at Christmas. Wedding showers I paint them gold, silver or white and put different types of wedding ornaments in them and baby showers I paint them pastels and put baby booties in them.
Emily Brassie says
I love the Dollar Tree too, but when it comes to candy bars, Meijer always has full size candy bars for 87 cents each and sometimes runs buy 5 get 5 free deals on them!
Katie says
That’s great to know! I wish we had a Meijer’s here.
Hilary says
Hi Katie!
Thx for sharing your opinions! I think Dollar Tree has it’s good things a d no so good. When my kids were in college, I always told them to FIND the Dollar Tree around where they lived for shampoo, body wash, body sponges, soap bars, paper towels, batteries, foam boards, etc. I really don’t know what college kids would do without this store!!!
Ilonka says
I agree on the spray bottles, the trigger does not release.I have found many cute garden ornaments, socks for seniors, and some good books.Candy is dandy of course as are the chips…just the right size for road trips, plus the 88cent 1 litre pop…(.occassionaly)
Blandean says
do not buy pickles they are nasty that is the only thing i found bad Love the store
Jennifer says
I didn’t read through the comments but did want to add a bit about toothpaste. I LOVE Crest 3D White and use it everyday. I don’t know if it my area or just my luck, but I’ve been able to get my toothpaste at the Dollar Tree for two years now.
Katie says
I noticed that we have it at ours, too! Great tip!
Kerri says
I bought 4 LED lamps from dollar tree last year and they work great. I saw the exact same ones at walmart for $15.98. You just have to be selective.
Vicki says
Love Dollar Store! We camp and I get the foil pop up sheets for grilling and food packs. Also buy foil containers for making meals ahead of time both for camping and home. Plastic plates and bowls for the camper stock ans small bottles of condiments that can be refilled from home since not much space in camper to store items. I occasionally buy office supplies for work as well.
mischel says
i like the office supplies, paper clips, stick pins, etc. i have twin girls and the party supplies were such a big help. thank you for your time and the website. have a happy new year!!!
Anita says
Awesome Oxygen is the same thing as Oxiclean. I buy it and it works great!
Mandi says
I find the large boxes of chicken broth and occasionally chicken stock at the dollar tree by me at the grocery store the cheapest I’ve seen them are $2 a box. Also sponges are a good deal at 2/$1.
Martha says
Retired person. Shop there all the time. Some of the food items are great sizes for me. My daughter and I go at least once a week. There are great bargains and some losers just up to what you expect. But mistakes are only a dollar. Thanks for all the comments.
Marcey Badillo says
A Dollar Tree epic fail: tape. Scotch tape, packing tape, masking tape, even the name brands all tear off the roll in teeny tiny frustrating bits! Grrr! On the positive side: I love the DT flossers. The Closeup or Aim brand have a sharp-ish pick to scrape along the gumlime or back teeth to remove plaque and tarter. It really gets the gunk between teeth too. I love their plastic wrap covers for leftover food, like little shower caps. Very convenient. Some of things I like there, some not so much. You just have to try each item to see what you like. And if you don’t like it, then you’re only out a buck. Win-win
Pam says
I LOVE the Dollar Tree!! I used to buy candles, several at a time. The scents are limited but for a buck I’m not going to complain. When I moved into an apartment I had to stop buying them because my lease has a clause in it that candles are not allowed. I was bummed, I love to burn them. And they are a lot cheaper than Yankee Candle!!. I found some of the medical supplies to be okay – the antacids work just as good as Tums or Rolaids. Another good buy is the gel bead room deodorizers. Again, for a buck you can’t beat it!! Condiments, cookies, crackers, chips, etc are also as good as name brands. I could go on, but I would be duplicating a lot of things but I won’t. However, I get a good feeling when I go in and come out with 3 or 4 bags of stuff for less than $20 or $25.
Lauri says
Buy a candle warmer (I’ve used the ones made for keeping a cup of coffee warm too) or use a wax warmer (this requires cutting the candle up and putting chunks in the warmer)
Both give you the scents without needing the fire
Sandra tockey says
You might not get big candles with yankee but their votives quite often are just a dollar and much better smell and quality when they have their sales
Rose says
I buy cords for my phone at the dollar tree amd they last a long time. The trick is when storing you wrap it the same way as it was in the package. I use a hair tie to hold it or a small claw clip
Robert Baer says
I have found the 8-pack AAA and AA batteries, as well as the 9V batteries to give good lasting service.
I always buy an excess quantity, and put the unused ones in a zip-lock baggie in the crisper section of the refrigerator; that keeps them fresh (like new) for at least a year or more.
Michelle says
Living in the Northeast, we can get a lot of snow. I always buy the milk in containers that don’t require refrigeration. Packaged and made in the US and only require to be put in the fridge once opened.
Patricia says
I love dollar tree, use all said,i do like cards, look over and can find nice ones.i love the reading glasses, find them to be perfect, get at least 2or3 each visit, leave them all over house and car.use the Betty Crocker utensils and have gotten them for daughter, introduced her to this store near where she lives and just loves it,she has kids and gets it…remember there are China products in Walmart and target.you get what you pay for….
lynn says
I buy dog collars there. I walk my dog with a harness so his “necklace” is just for ID tags. He has a tendency to grab his collar off the table and chew it up and I’ve gone through some spendy ones before discovering these!
Thanks for the great list of things, I shop there a lot. I also get stationery and desk/home office supplies.
Holly says
I never had problems with batteries. love the plastic baskets for organizing. I buy the flowers and table cloths for decorating at home and my church as filler flowers. The cards are a great buy.
Deborah says
I’m a HUGE Dollar Tree fan! Pretty much agree with everything on your list, but I disagree with the spices, except for maybe salt and pepper. I’ve tried several different spices and they were all quite low quality.
One thing I would add is the foil wrappers. 30 for $1 is a true bargain! I use them for pre-made breakfast sandwiches:-)
They have awesome cocktail/wine glasses too!
Diana says
I recently bought a bunch of metal shelf organizers from the dollar tree and I love them. I plan on getting more. I have used them in my kitchen cabinets and have basically been able to double the amount of usable space on my shelves because smaller items can be placed in multiple layers. I got regular shelves, a spice shelf and plate rack which I use for pot lids.
I buy a huge variety of items from the dollar tree. I like their some of their tupperware, as well as their glassware, dishes, and cleaning supplies. My dollar tree also has a large food section so I get some frozen and dry goods there, but you have to be careful, sometimes the canned goods are actually cheaper at the grocery store. I tend to buy bags of frozen veggies there because you can get a fair amount for a dollar.
Things I do not recommend:
Toilet paper- it is too thin and it is not soft.
Mops- go get a good mop that can actually scrub things and doesn’t need to constantly be replaced.
Sherrri says
Glue sticks from Dollar Tree are ones I would totally suggest walking away from. “Stick” to name brands. ?
Katie says
Good to know!
Kate says
The generic aluminum foil was awful and I won’t buy it again. It was supposedly heavy duty, but ripped like tissue! But I still love the puzzle books, packs of mechanical pencils, erasers, etc., bags of hard candy, and hair supplies. The packs of hair elastics, barrettes, etc. work just fine for me and are so much less expensive than they’d be anywhere else! Considering how often I lose my hair accessories, it doesn’t make sense for me to buy them anywhere else. Just watch the elastics–they do still carry the ones with metal connectors that can get caught and break hair. The others have been awesome.
Barb Langworthy says
I have the Betty Crocker cooking utensils and they are over a year old and none have broken. I also purchase snack items at the Dollar Tree. They have an off brand of snack crackers that are as good as the name brand (I think they are the same). Many good food items too.
Robert says
I am a little obsessed with this place as well! Now i know many will not even consider some of what I’m gonna say. But i certainly think it’s worth a try! I do agree with staying away from electronics but some accessories can be useful. I just got some stylus/pens and they are as quality as ones that cost over ten bucks! Some random other phone accessories CAN be ok, but youve gotta be really thorough, and ok with maybe wasting a dollar. I myself always go for the juice thats in a paper type container, like mango, amd guava are most common. Brand i remember is Jumex. I’ve seen the exact same containers at giant/Safeway for up to $2+, but also on sale for as little as $1. (Better deals on soda i think, i just haven’t drank soda for a while) But here is the crown jewel- Frozen fruit!! Wait! Before you dismiss, hear me out. I have become addicted to smoothies, and make one nearly every day. I also love eating Frozen fruit as a snack/dessert. So, i have had top notch frozen, and fresh fruit. Also get a lot from trader joes. Anyone who’s familiar with frozen mango will know that, as far as thawing it or eating frozen, you will always get those chunks that may be high quality, perfectly fine mango, but either being an outside not so ripe piece, or simply packaged before being perfectly ripe, usually the majority of pieces fall into this category from any brand. I’m not saying these are baf, just that ideally I’d prefer a bag of all perfectly ripe, darker colored gems of mango! Also wanna hit the lottery too! Anyway, for $1, ive gotten mango, mango+banana+papaya+pineapple, berry mix(straw, blue,+black or rasp, csnt remember), and same berry mix+banana. I first tried just one of each they had then, figuring it was only $1.60/lb. Which around me anyway, is a bargain! I decided it was at very least good enough, and got more next time. But this time i really inspected each bag, and several of each. I also had 2 different bags of trader joes mango(not organic), a mixed berries, as well as some frome another grocery store($4-$5/lb;sale price-,$2.50/lb at best)I ate frozen, thawed, made smoothies and inspected all next to one another. The one semi consistent difference was appearance. The harris teeter brand blackberries and raspberries were especially beautiful and totally intact, making for a great presentation. But making smoothies, who cares?! When tasting, i honestly saw no difference whatsoever. Now, woth the dollar store, you are gonna get less consistency, but not a problem. For example, one bag of mango was filled entirely with much smaller pieces of mango, and they were all perfectly ripe! I couldn’t believe it! Taste wise the bag even outdid the ORGANIC trader joes! Frozen desserts aint too bad either!
Liz says
Ever heard “you get what you pay for”. Dollar Tree has some absolutely wonderful bargains for the money. Brand name coffee creamer, candy, cards, poster board, party bags, metal pans (that need no cleaning after use-can be thrown away) and many other things. Smart shoppers know how to take advantage of the “deals” these stores have to offer. GREAT alternative to Wal-Mart and even some other stores that carry similar products!
Carol says
If you have not tried Awesome cleaner that is yellow in color and is in a spray bottle and also comes in a refill size, then try it. I use it on walls, cleaning glass and stainless coffee pots inside where the coffee stains, bathroom tubs, sinks ,toilets, some spots on clothes, black marks on floors, black sticky marks on floors, and cars wheels ,tires etc.Try it. I have recommended Awesome to many people. The ones that tried it agreed and were amazed. This product is also septic safe.
Linda Hunter says
My husband loves it! It used to be sold in the Washington DC area door-to-door in a larger bottle for $25 & I bought some when I was shown how it cleaned my tarnished door knobs and even the red clay stains from cement! It’s fantastic on laundry stains. I’ve been using it for about 30 years with great results.
My other favorite is THE WORKS products for toilet cleaning — Terrific! And also their lime scale remover — Great! Same excellent results with LIME AWAY. same product, just a smaller amount.
I never hesitate to purchase cleaning supplies at Dollar Stores; I just make sure I buy the good stuff like Mr. Clean and other dependable name brands. Touché !
jessica walker says
I go to Dollar Tree faithfully. I disagree with some of the things you said not to get. I have bought utensils plastic and silverware, electronics, batteries, etc. All work for me and my family and some of the items we’ve gotten we still have. Now I do agree with you on the spray bottles. For some reason they always leak or just stop spraying completely. But I recommend everyone to shop there cause some of their stuff is better than going to Walmart, etc.
Gina says
I love going to the dollar tree for all my plastic forks and spoons…I have 4 growing boys that love to dirty dishes all day. I also buy the Styrofoam bowls and plates there…for the same reason. The cleaner called awesome is just that…I use it for LOTS of things around the house but mainly in the laundry. Thanks for all the tips I wasn’t so sure about!
Katie says
I hear you on the paper plates and plastic utensils! Haha. I’ll have to look into the laundry detergent.
Nancy Bodin says
Truth be told, i was Not a Dollar store shopper but than I had to retire and on a limited income so I swallowed my pride and started shopping there. We have 2 dollar stores here in our little Minnesota town and i love The Dollar General! I just wanted to say that my favorite name brand mayo is only $3.65 for the 32 oz jar and unless it is on sale at our 2 grocery stores, is $7.99!! And Chicken of the sea albacore tuna is $2.65 for a little can and dollar store is a 3pack for $2.95!! You can get a 40oz. Diet coke for a $1 and the 16oz in cooler is $1.89!! Ibuy tiolet paper, paper plates, lots of times my favorite Bake at home pizza is usually $2-$3 cheaper? So yes I highly recommend Dollar General ! Even when I buy name brands I still save money! Oh and I buy lots of greeting cards for $1 , i get to send cards when if I paid regular price I wouldnt get to send! Thank You!

Our vet said do not buy pet food, treats or toys from Dollar Tree. All are from China and dangerous. Read the labels! If it says, “Marketed In” the U.S., read on to where it’s, “Made In.” Foreign bodies in the food! I love Dollar Tree, especially cards, gift bags, name brand food. I also coupon & DT accepts coupons. Sometimes get things free!
Katie says
Great tips!! That’s really good to know about the pet food and treats!
S says
Apparently we have all been warned about items coming out of China ( which seems to be overtaking anything else made elsewhere) especially toothpaste, makeup and toys. The ingredients are quite harmful and sometimes fatal. READ LABELS CAREFULLY??
Melba says
You did not mention the plastic food storage containers. I love thee – 3 containers for $1.00. I pack food for my grandson, and these are wonderful, especially since they do not always get returned. I shop Dollar Tree regularly for cards, containers, etc. and I really LOVE that store. Of course, some of their stores are better than others. I guess it depends on the location and maybe manager. Thanks for your tips.

Dollar Tree bins and baskets are great for using in the classroom. I buy more every year and the colors are great. My kids love to pick out a toy there (even if it is junk and breaks later). It’s only a dollar and they know it might not be the best quality. Their sand toys are great, too. I love going in to get pens and pencils for my classroom, too. LOVE the Dollar Tree!
Katie says
Great thoughts! Thanks for sharing!

Do not buy the tablecloths. The smell is terrible; I don’t think they are healthy or safe to use.
Dawn says
I find the generic Damp Rid, regular or with the activated charcoal, to be a great bargain. Sometimes I go in only for that, and they have kept my otherwise damp and sometimes musty basement completely dry.
Jayla says
I took a chance and bought some headphones. They aren’t as loud but they still had great quality and I got them for 1.00 rather than the 10.00 I’d spend at Walmart.
Katie says
That’s great! Definitely good for $1 it sounds like!
Lori says
Foil, they do carry name brands those are fine but the off or generic brands
Lori says
Don’t buy it I forgot to leave out
Linda says
I like the Brillo basics pads . they are great for cleaning the frying pans. Those that are not supposed to stick, but do. They do not scratch the pans. I also like the packages of scouring pads that have 10 different colors per pack. They are hard to find anymore. I cut each pad into 4 pieces and divide them into about 24 pieces per tray and give them as gifts at Christmas. All the ladies in the family live them. Throw them away after you wear them out. They also will not scratch your ceramic stove top. A lot cheaper than 2 for $3.00 at Walmart for ceramic stove top pads.
Beth says
Screen protector for phones are an amazing deal they now have the tempered glass ones, even on amazon you cannot get this good of a deal and they work very well.

I love the Dollar Store cleaner Awesome!! This stuff is great you can use it on anything. I have had problems with the batteries “sunbeam ” after they would die they would leak though my item or items they were in.
Darlene says
I have been using L.A.s totally awesome all purpose cleaner for about 4 years and just like it’s name..it is just that..awesome! I have used 409and many other cleaners..but this stuff beats them all! You can get a 20 oz. spray bottle for a buck..or a refill bottle which has much more! You can refill the 20 oz.bottle or buy a dollar spray bottle and save even more by buying the larger refill bottle.I should be a spokeswoman for the stuff..it’s great for just about anything!! Love love love it!
Christi + S says
I love the Dollar Tree for books! My grandma loves to read and goes through books so fast so whenever I am there I pick up 4-6 books. Many are hardcover but the usually are ones you have never heard of (though I have gotten some from bestselling authors in the past). Just a tip to look through their book section too 🙂
Deb says
I know this might not be something you would expect, but the hair dye is as good or better than any department store. For one dollar a box versus 5 to 10 , it is definately a great bargain. I’ve been using it for years, and have had no negative effects, yet great coverage and color.
Lisa says
Hi, this is a great list. One thing we always purchase from Dollar Tree is gallon jugs of spring water. It’s economical and has a good flavor. Another item we used to buy regularly is their scented diaper sacks with tie handles. Much better value than the ones I’ve seen elsewhere. I think I saw vases mentioned already, and it reminded me of the candle holders I bought for my daughter’s wedding. Of course, I did examine them carefully to make sure I got the best looking ones.
Sue says
They have a sausage on a biscuit to die for! Well worth $1.00. I buy the eggs and feta cheese too. No problems .
Gift bags great buy. Also wee wee pads. So baby things I buy there. Plastic bags all sizes!
Wish we had thus store when I was divorced and raising two kids!
Amy says
One thing I never see on these lists is nasal strips. They work good and are a fraction of the price of the name brand ones. Their aluminum pans/containers are also good. These are great for picnics and parties where you’ll set up a buffet station and send food home with people.
Sara Thompson says
I found it interesting that you barely mentioned buying food at Dollar Tree. We buy our pasta there – 2 pounds for a dollar and it tastes like pasta. We also buy our tortillas there – we think they taste great and it sure beats paying $4 a dozen which is what Walmart charges (and other stores). If we had a good local place to buy better quality tortillas, this would be a different story but since all we have access to is cheaply made tortillas, I’m buying mine at the dollar store. Also, they carry Hormel pepperoni. It’s cheaper than the grocery store (smaller package but the price per ounce is still cheaper). They have good pizza sauce and canned tomatoes as well. For someone who really has to stretch her grocery money, the dollar store has been a lifesaver. I wouldn’t do all my grocery shopping there but I have been really impressed with the products I have mentioned (and we’re rather picky food people).
Katie says
Thanks for all your great insights! I actually haven’t bought a ton of food a the dollar tree, so I appreciate your commenting. Great ideas!
Carol says
Don’t forget, Dollar Tree takes manufacture couopns!
Frozen name brand foods in the bigger stores.
They have close out books and gotten great cookbooks to give
For housewarming gift. Over all, I liked your post and hope you do up dates from time to time.
Lauri says
Sadly not all of the locations have large food sections- ours doesn’t have frozen or refrigerated sections ☹️
Jeanna says
I love Dollar Tree, but I would highly caution customers about candy or food items. Many edible items sold at The Dollar Tree are made in China, so beware! The quality control standards are simply not the same as the US. Make sure any candy or food you buy is US made.
Tara says
Frequent the Dollar Tree here…. I agree with you whole Do list. I’ buy about everything you mentioned pretty regularly or at least have purchased, except socks. I’ll have to try those. Including pregnancy tests for both of my pregnancies. (They were accurate and I was very early on, like 3 wks.)
I also buy “Puffs” tissues. My husband’s & kids’ sunglasses. In the frozen section they have these cherry and lemon cups that are a delicious treat for only 1.00. They have single ice cream treats in a small freezer which is much cheaper than a gas station if you are only needing 1 or 2. I have bought iPhone cases there great ones w a case and belt holster as well as iPhone screen protectors. We have bought night lights for then kids’ rooms. Cat/dog toys and dishes. Bungee cords, combination locks definitely organization containers/baskets and also baskets to make gifts. I buy my snack Sz baggies there. Light bulbs, binder clips, paper clips, cotton balls, valentines goodies, poster board, learning books for kids. We buy beach toys when we are on vacation and just leave them at the condo we stayed at because they were JUST a dollar. Pop up hampers and clothes hangers for vacation also. As for us the toys are usually okay buys as well dress up clothes, balls, whoop cushion (my son loves these) they usually last a day or 2 and by that time kids are ready for something different anyway. I have bought Betty Crocker kitchen utensils that have been great. Lots of scissors. Those don’t last long but I usually lose them in such a short time that the 1.00 is worth it to me. Flash lights for the kids to play w on late nights in the summer. Just to name a few more decent buys from the Dollar Tree.:)
One thing you can add to the DO NOT BUY list is a can opener. One of those sent me to the Clinic for stitches. (Yikes!) also, straws generally don’t work out too well they always seem to have a small tear. Not all but quite a few. Anytime I need to shop I try to make the Dollar Tree my first stop then I proceed to WalMart or Target.
Elizabeth says
I but lots of stuff from DT and have gotten the can opener and have been using it for a year. I am so sorry about your bad experience with the DT can opener.. I have gotten lots of my craft ideas from dollar tree and have made some awesome stuff. The greeting cards are a fav of mine and I do like the ballons too. I send my mom a 30 dollar gift card as she loves dollar tree as much as I do.. I will say this you can be creative and you can make the food really taste good and for a couple of bucks you have a meal it’s worth it.. still I’m always going to be a DT fan!!!
Ashley says
My husband and I were looking to redo our front entry way. We are very DIY minded and ended up buying bags of river rocks from the dollar tree to lay in grout for the entrance. It took a weekend of work but it looks great and it was less than half the cost it would have been to place tile there!!
I have also noticed the dollar tree seems to randomly get small amounts of some of the more pricey name brand products that they don’t normally carry. I have come across medicines like Triaminic and Zarbees and I recently just bought Jello brand pudding kits that come with the themed molds for kids that usually run $5 or so. You do have to watch the expiration dates though as those “random” products do seem to be due to expire soon!
Katie says
That’s very cool! I’d love to see a picture of how that turned out.
And I agree – they do randomly have name brand and pricey items. I definitely think it’s worth checking back regularly!
Connie says
I noticed you mentioned candy. While they are good, I strongly recommend checking expiration dates on them before buying. We walked in to buy the reisen bags and every single bag on the shelf had been expired for months. Same goes for toothpaste or anything you are putting in ur mouth.
Katie says
Very good point!
Brittany says
There’s this cleaning spray, Awesome Spray, that my boyfriend introduced me too. Takes out baby poo stains, blood, wine, and just about anything! I would highly recommend! 32 oz for a dollar and some you can get a gallon for three dollars
Katie says
That’s amazing! Definitely going to find this next time.
Terry Clark says
My BF turned me on to the LA Awesome cleaners. He uses both the all purpose cleaner and the carpet cleaner in the apartments he cleans. I love the carpet cleaner…great for when the fur baby has an accident! The all purpose cleaner is great…you dilute it so it goes a long way. I keep some in a spray bottle bought from DT. I have had some problems with the spray bottles. Sometimes the spray nozzle quits working. Never had any leaks tho. I also use the Sunbeam batteries with no problems. Use them in clocks and remotes. Another great buy there is their phone cases, especially the belt clip on type the BF likes.
Trisha says
We use awesome every day in our cleaning company. It is amazing at getting off tough grease on kitchen cabinets and vent hoods. It’s a great product..
Sam King says
Try the laundry stain cleaner. Very effective, I’ve teaded in my Shout for it. Also you can use the carpet cleaner for stain removal in a pinch. Hasn’t damaged clothing.
Joanne says
I have saved a ton restocking vacation rentals with basics. This is not usually done, so our company got brownie points. We received rebooking just because of this touch. Dollar Tree prices made this cheap but noteworthy PR.
There must be others who have offices, clubs, whatever that can stretch their budget.
Marcia says
I was disappointed in the Valentine ink stampers. The ink was dried up. I did find a pack of 10 blank pink cards with envelopes that my Sunday school class can make Valentines cards with. Have them write a bible verse(about love), add some stickers and was going to use the ink stampers. Maybe I can find a cheap ink pad before then. The cards are very nice though. Oh, also a disappointment was the Valentines plastic treat bags. They had holes in the bottom. Had to tape them to hold the stuff in.

Hi, I just wanted to say I’m an assistant manager at dollar tree. I used to keep in mind that everything is worth it because u get what u pay for everything’s a dollar. But working their I have came across some very good items that you would say wow only a dollar when in fact would of been 20 dollars at Walmart.
Katie says
Thanks for the great insight! Love hearing from employees!

Hubby and I LOVE The Dollar Tree. We buy all our greeting cards for family and friends and save bundles. The only thing we NEVER buy there are any medicines. We were once told it was not a good idea from a doctor and also read it in a local paper. I believe there was a concern on expiration dates and also the generic brands.
Crystal says
You mentioned the pregnancy tests. I used the Dollar Tree tests all three times I found out I was pregnant. They weren’t always the easiest to read but they all worked and read fairly quickly.
Christi says
Agreed…. I have 4 and all four were dollar store test they have never failed me. They have the dollar one and then they have the little more expensive one but either way they are all less than 5 dollars. I used the dollar ones and found out I was expecting all 4 times

Mylar Helium Balloons are THE BEST from the dollar store. They have decent styles/designs and they last forever! My coworkers birthday was Nov 16,2016 I got her 3 balloons, 2 of them are still standing tied to her chair at work and it’s Feb 4, 2017!! Not that anyone would ever need balloons to last that long, but they can!
We use the batteries from Dollar Tree at work for things like megaphones, flashlights, Wands, remotes, etc. They actually hold up pretty well and for the amount that we need to buy it works for us!
Nicole says
my 3 year old would disagree lol. good to know about the balloons.
Lauri says
I got my mom-in-law balloons middle of March and both are still full! Brightens up her room??
Marina says
Hello,
I find the aerosol cans of bathroom cleaners and oven cleaner work great! Never have I had the nozzle stop working.
I’ve purchased bowls and plates and never had them break or chip unless the edge was hit hard on the faucet….Any bowl would break?
Candy, socks and nail polish are just as good as any other and I love the savings.
Bread and cereal are also just as good as any other bought from a regular store.
I shop at Dollar Tree often and go there before going shopping at a regular store. The savings really make a great difference.
Laundry detergent isn’t very good… Doesn’t clean well at all.
BTW I’m a Dollar Tree fan!
Marina
Cathy says
I agree with your mom. The sunbeam brand of batteries don’t always fit, PLUS they have a tendency to “explode” or burn up inside whatever item you are using them in. I have damaged a remote and a couple of flashlights with this brand. Just the other day I was trying to salvage a battery operated candle of sentimental value because I stupidly used the sunbeam batteries. I find that Panasonic brand batteries are the best. A great place to get button cell batteries too!
Another bang for your buck…… diabetic socks! I buy them for my mom. She says they’re just as good as the brand she purchased for 12.99/ pair.
Another great buy…… ball point pens, gel pens and word find books!
Happy shopping y’all!

I have used the round pill organizer for a while now
I carry it in my purse and rarely have I had an issue with it popping open. Usually when i over stuff my purse assnd it gets bumped around. KimAfter alot of use, I do find that the individual tabs that close are prone to falling off, but hey it’s only a dollar. If I get 6 mos out of them, usually, I think that’s pretty good.
Krystal says
I have to completely disagree with utensils, knives and crayons(dollar store kind yes, but ours sells crayola brand and they work fine). I own many knives and untesils from the dollar tree and I’ve never had an issue of them not lasting. They have lasted longer than a few years(or more ) each for us. I also use them TONS! So, with that said its all about what kind you get, and if it’s made properly and not a factory reject.
TIFFANY says
I disagree about the electronics. I buy $1 ear buds and $1 phone chargers all the time. Both are constantly getting lost or left somewhere and Dollar Tree provides a cheap, steady steam of them. I will admit that, rarely, I will get a set of ear buds with only one functional bud.
J0nathan says
Lovely article and very true, especially the tape comment!!!!
I love the dollar tree for buying shelving brackets to make shelves in garage, store front, for a TV, etc
Can’t beat two brackets for $1
Also sparkling and painting supplies are very valuable at Dollar Tree
J0nathan says
Spackling*^

I just bought a pill organizer there it’s a weekly M-F pill organizer it’s circular rather than a rectangle anyways the pill organizer is AWFUL ! I have bought the rectangular ones at Wal-Mart and Walgreens before and they were maybe $1.50 but were much better than this dollar tree pill organizer. The dollar tree pill organizer does not have a tight seal so it wouldn’t be good to carry in your purse it basically must lie flat at all times on a shelf. Until I get another one I am keeping mine in a baggie in case one compartment opens and pills spill they will at least be contained in the baggie.
Also did you list the single nail clippers and manicure sets as a worst yet? The single clippers and the clippers that come in the manicure sets are dull, buy these at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens instead also.
Katie says
Good to know! I will make sure to keep an eye out for those pill organizers. I’ve seen different kinds at our DT>
And I haven’t tried the nail clippers or manicure sets, but that is also good to know to avoid them.

My daughter used to work at a DollarTree. She said the local restaurants used to order in the glasses and stemware by the case. Seems it was cheaper than going thru a restaurant supply store. The glassware is made by Anchor Hocking.
Tina says
I have to disagree with you on the knives. I bought some little ones and i would rather use them then steak knives. Those are my favorite. I use them to cut veggies, raw and cooked meats, boiled eggs almost anything.
Angela VanDusen says
Over the weekend we had an ice storm that left me without power for a few hours…I had bought a few portable lights to put around a vanity I am making in my bedroom. I realized I had forgotten to buy candles, I gathered them all up and placed them around my house. When the electricity went off they were perfect. My house had light wherever I needed it…I was even able to do my nails….They were powered by DS batteries also. As far as toys go…My grandaughters love the dress up clothes…They last about as long as thier attention span so perfect really.
Katie says
Haha! Love the last sentence there 🙂
Virginia Sams says
I live in a small college town and the Dollar tree is a life saver for many students on a small budget. I am retired now and on a smaller budget so I also find many useful items there… my grandchildren also love the Dollar tree…they can always find something. Pet lovers can find Friskie soft cat food and cat litter at a great price. Also, a lot of the stocking and lay-out of the store depends on a good manager there.
Tara says
I so wish Dollar Trees were around when I was in college 25 years ago!!!! Definitely a God send for all of us :). I enjoyed the list! I have also found fabulous adult coloring books-large ones that are superb quality. I gave as gifts to teenagers who loved them. Sometimes you can also find descent hardback books as well. Bibles are always there-great for church parties!! We love the kids shampoo- same as other places & cheaper.
Aliya says
I love Dollar Tree, no doubt about it. However, as far as the party supplies, Walmart has brighter, prettier colors than Dollar tree for $.94 (tablecloths, forks, spoons, and plates). It depends on what you’re looking for but I was super disappointed when I seen the better looking pink and blue at Walmart! Oh also, they have pain relieving cream at Dollar Tree that works wonders!!
Belinda says
I use Sunbeam batteries from The Dollar Tree for candles and Christmas candles, as well as Christmas window candles for 2-3 weeks, estimating usage 6 hours/night.. I remove the batteries when I dismantle decorations, place the used ones in plastic container separate from my new batteries. I have used the(Christmas batteries) for 3 years and hope to use the used batteries again next year. If I have to replace them next year I will purchase the Sunbeam batteries from The Dollar Tree. Thanks!

All good suggestions! I also recommend basics such as deodorant (name brand), toilet paper (not great but not bad) — same with paper towels. Plus Dawn dish soap, freezer bags, foil, trash bags, drawer organizers, candles, and (my fa??vorite) organizing bins! I use them in my closets and dresser, they’re terrific for keeping order under sinks, and I started using various sizes to organize my refrigerator and freezer.
I echo your review of reading glasses from Dollar Tree. They’re not top-of-the-line but they work perfectly and actually fit me better than glasses by Foster Grant I got from Walgreens — plus, at a dollar per pair you can pick up a variety!
Happy Shopping ☺
PS I am actually a fan of Dollar Tree batteries. I use them in my remote and it’s still going strong. Thumbs up from me!
Bridgette says
I haven’t had a problem with spray bottles either.
I mentioned above about the grocery I can’t complain about the spices we use a lot of spices in my home
Bridgette says
I love dollar tree…. Although with some items like in grocery department you don’t get a good quantity. By time you average out how many packages you would have to buy at dollar tree to equal to a normal size package at Walmart you’re spending the same amount or more.
Other than that little comment everything else is good. I like the little “fish bowls” I bought them for center pieces for parties etc. They also have a lot of different things you can do crafts with if your a mom that likes to do crafts with your kids
Stephanie says
I don’t have a problem with the spray bottles.

I also agree with everything you say. I love my Dollar Stores I get lucky with most things I buy from there, specially with the bill when I pay ?. Thanks for the tips!!

I, also, agree that the batteries work just as well from Dollar Tree as Walmart/Target.since many are name brands, I’m not sure where they are sold makes a difference. PS. My husband “thinks” they are not as good either! What does he know? 🙂
Katie says
Haha! Well, if we are talking about the name brand batteries, that’s another story. I’m referring to the Dollar Tree “Sunbeam” brand. My mom was telling me the other day that she has issues with them fitting correctly into things. ha!
Chris says
I’ve used DT’s Sunbeam batteries for years and the only time I had a problem is when I used Heavy Duty in items that required alkaline. Other than that the Sunbeam have lasted just as well as the more expensive name brands bought elsewhere.

Hi Katie!
I am a merchandiser for the American Greetings company which is the brand of cards sold in all Dollar Trees. You would be surprised (then again maybe not!) just how many Dollar Tree customers comment to me about how “nice” our cards are for $1 or less. And our packs of cards seem to sell really well. I’m glad people appreciate that because we all work really hard to keep them in the stores in an orderly, up-to-date way. And I love that you used one of our card departments in your main image! 🙂
I would like to also point out that I buy ALOT of sunflower seeds from Dollar Tree. The exact same bag sells at Walmart for $1.24! So the cost of buying 4 bags at Walmart would have yielded 5 bags at Dollar Tree. That really adds up!
Forrest Clark says
Hi, Lori! Thanks so much for commenting. American Greetings is certainly a great company, and I certainly appreciate your company’s hard work 🙂 And that’s a great tip about the Sunflower Seeds – I had no idea!
Forrest Clark says
Oops that response was from Katie, not Forrest 🙂

Hi Katie, I love a lot of your ideas, thank you! I like the 12 count metal binder clips. I use them for bag clips they work great. And you get double the amount compared to the ones that you have used.
Samantha says
Love shopping at Dollar Tree, especially for holiday and party supplies. I also always purchase the round/square 1- and 2-cup plastic containers (all bPA-free) to use for freezing soups and sauces. For $.20/each, I never feel guilty recycling them after use, if I don’t feel like washing them and re-using. Every summer, I stock up on their huge selection of home-education supplies. Tons of workbooks, learning devices, and wall-decoration/learning tools that we use for summer bridge learning. When we’re all done, I pass them on to teacher or home-schooling friends 🙂 The movie-theater candy can also be found at Walmart and Target for $.88 – $.98 (cheaper than Dollar Tree). The biggest caveat about Dollar Tree is you really have to know your price comparisons. I’ve found many small items can be purchased for a better price-per-item at Walmart. Many items at Dollar Tree are small packages (100-count) for $1, whereas you can get a larger item-count (200-count or more) for just a few cents more ($1.28). It always pays to do a little research 🙂
Lori says
good list… I also like to pick up some really inexpensive serving bowls and platters for pot lucks… they can be glass or plastic…the cheaper the better…and just like with utensils, if you dont get them back its no big deal. I would also caution folks to check the sizes on toothpaste and other such products…while I found the quality to be the same on name brands, in a few instances packages were much smaller and not a bargain.
Susan G. says
Hi Kathy, Dollar Tree is the place to go for gift bags. I also love picking up holiday decorations from there. However for my movie candy, Walmart has a great selection for 98 cents each and I don’t have to make an extra trip to Dollar Tree.
Reba says
The reading glasses are not of good quality, but they are $1.
Kathy says
Very disappointed in a lot of the items you mentioned. Quality is just not there.
Katie says
Hi, Kathy! Thanks for your thoughts. I supposed to each their own – I surveyed quite a few people and went off of my own experience, and most of these items were recommended by multiple people 🙂
Nora Isaacs says
Hi this is Nora in AZ, I SHOP THERE A LOT AND MY FAVORITES ARE, THE RUBERMAID STOAGE CONTAINERS W/ SCREW ON LIDS. I also get the freezer bags, candy, bins, plastic dish pans, bins. A lot of their cleaning supplies are good & 25-50%cheaper than elsewhere. I’m a crafter, gardener, voracious cook, doing large batches to freeze THIS STORE SAVES ME AT LEAST 30.00 A MONTH..It’s a God send on disability.

ann says
You are at the Dollar Tree. You aren’t going to get fabulous quality like some expensive brands. So, for us poor folk, it is top of the line for dollar items. I get the comet foaming bleach and the dust wand dusters. Are they like expensive brand? No. But they are adequate and I can pay my bills. The do not buy suggestions are not even close to adequate.
Nicole says
Ann, why are you getting so defensive? She simply is going on opinions of people surveyed and her own experience. She is not saying don’t buy them (except for the electronics). She is giving suggestions of what may not be the best buy. Sometimes it is worth spending a little more to have things last longer, rather than having to go and buy multiple times, because they break. Just because you only spent a dollar, doesn’t mean that doesn’t add up too. We all appreciate the dollar tree, whether we have to shop there or not. It saves anyone money. Make your own judgements about what you like and next time, let us know what you like, but don’t bash Katie for giving her opinion.
Katie says
Thank you, Nicole 🙂
Valarie says
I actually took Ann as agreeing with you. Some can’t afford to shop at high end stores or even Walmart. Let’s face it, The Dollar store isn’t shopping at Macy’s. For the “poor folk” the Dollar store IS top of the line and that’s ok.
Sandy says
Hi. Mostly I agree with your suggestions, but on the subject of batteries…. maybe we use them for different purposes. I mostly use them for my exercise bike and clocks. I’ve found the 8/a dollar ones last just as long as the much more expensive ones from Walmart or Target.
Also I get pancake turners and bowl spatulas at Dollar Tree. They work well, wash easily and can be thrown out without guilt when they get nasty.
One more item I love are the big root beer mugs. They hold ice and a full can of soda and the heavy weight keeps things cold longer and don’t tip over as easily.
Katie says
Hi, Sandy! Thanks for your input 🙂 I think it could definitely vary depending on use. I haven’t had the best luck with the batteries, but I’m glad they have worked well for you! Good tips on the pancake turners!
I haven’t ever checked out the root beer mugs. I’m going to have to check those out! Overall, I’ve been pleased with their plates and cups that I’ve used.
Brooke says
I bought the big glass root beer mugs for a 35th birthday party as centerpieces, the theme was “cheers and beers to 35 years” and they turned out fantastic so durable and heavy
Kit Haines says
You mentioned the plastic kitchen utensil., They may not work long term, but they are wonderful for taking to cook outs or bring a dish to pass. They are full size serving tool, but not expensive enough to care about if they get left behind.
Katie says
This is a great point! We actually did this very thing over Christmas when we were at a beach house and found ourselves missing some kitchen tools. Thanks for bringing this point up 🙂
Marva Graves says
Personaly,
I’ll purchase the Betty Crocker utensils because I know the brand is a good one and they can be 2-3 xs the price at department stores for the same items.

This is so great.
I go to the dollar store for a lot of the Christmas stuff picture frames I even found a key holder there.
I definitely agree with the don’t though.

Katie….Not all plastic utensils are bad. Our Dollar Tree where I live they have a large assortment of Utensils .I do buy all my Betty Crocker Utensils there for $1.00 and I have had them for years now and they hold up very well. Love our Dollar Tree too….

The Betty Crocker ones do seem to hold up better! The black and crystal-clear ones I have no luck with, though 🙂

I agree the Bettype Crocker ones last quite awhile!! I’ve had some going on 3yrs now and not an issue at all!! The othere I would stay away from, unless you are taking then somewhere and only using them once then you don’t have to carry them home!!
Thanks for the other tips though I’ve always wondered and now I can shop for MUCH LESS!!!!

The Betty Crocker brand tools work amazing I’ve bought many of them over a year ago and they’re still working perfectly

I used to work at Dollar tree. The one thing to know is if you see items like alcohol, peroxide or lotions and they are new to the shelf, stock up as many as you can, because the next order will be packaged smaller. Stock up on the lg 2 count hot pockets, check the socks sometimes you can get 3pr in a pack for a dollar, and always keep up with new store openings that’s where you will find your larger packs and many name brands before they go to a cheaper brand. Always shop there with a hand full of Colgate coupons, all you have to do is pay tax.

I don’t buy anything that can be consumed (eaten, drunk, or taken orally) anymore. I saw a show on ABC about how the name brands in the ‘Dollar’ type stores were knockoffs, and not only didn’t contain what was on the label, but they often contained harmful chemicals. I’m not a nut. This is for real. I love me some Dollar Store, Dollar General, and Family Dollar, but I just won’t take a chance with consumables and medications there anymore!

Ebay is a terrific source for batteries. One that if I get locally is $28 (one of those hard to find button types) is 2 / $1.00 including postage!

Add dish soap to the list of products to avoid. I’m an avid dollar store shopper and I’ve bought both cheap and name brand dish soap there and it’s always watery and diluted and not very effective. I’ve never had problems with small electronics like headphones, flashlights, etc and never had spray bottle products leak

This is an awesome post! We have a few Dollar Trees in our area, and I haven’t gone in as much as I’d like. Thanks for all the tips!

One thing you left of was glasses. I buy my wine glasses there and they’re heavy duty and if I break one, it’s no big deal to replace them. I never even use my good wine glasses anymore…the quality just doesn’t seem to ever the same!! These are great!

I shop at Dollar Tree often. We have a very large one right down the road from my house so I find myself there more than I should be. I love them for seasonal decor. We got quite a few Christmas decorations there this year. I also get all of my organization bins from there. I do agree on the batteries, i tried some and they lasted all of 5 minutes.
