Handmade Card Box

Handmade Card Box

Hello! Happy November. It’s Kathleen, from Fearlessly Creative Mammas with my addition to Katie’s Handmade Christmas. This is such a great idea. Katie has inspired me to make most of the gifts I give this year. I hope the receivers love what I make for them. I have actually talked my sister and my husband into exchanging only handmade gifts this year. I’m pretty excited to see what we all come up with to exchange. I have some ideas, but I’m still looking for more.

My addition to this Handmade Christmas is a gift idea. I made this particular gift for my mom and I really hope she isn’t reading this post. If so, sorry mom, you won’t be surprised. My mom has said on more than one occasion that she would like to have a box of handmade greeting cards.I decided that I would make her a bunch of cards and find a box to decorate that I could put them in for her to store. Today I’m showing you how I made the box.

I found this plain white box at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Store and it is the perfect size for the cards. The lid flips up to open the box.

The first thing I did was paint the outside of the box metallic silver. I used two coats of paint to obtain good coverage. I did not paint the bottom of the box. I was also very careful to not paint the tab.

I used some scrapbook paper and cut out some different pieces to decorate the box. I used flowers and uplifting words.  Next, I used Mod Podge to stick the pieces onto the box. I put down a liberal coat applied the pictures and then let it dry, making sure there were no bubbles. Then I put another liberal coat of Mod Podge over the paper to protect it. I did it one side at a time, so I could move the box with ease.

Next, I took some decorative file folders and cut them to size to form dividers that fit in the box. I also added labels for each type of card. The labels I used are listed below, but you can choose whatever labels you want.

Thank You                       Wedding

Congratulations             Sympathy

General                             Thinking of You

Birthday                           Baby

I also included one blank divider, so my mom can add a category if she wants.

Finally, I added the cards I made. I seem to have a lot more ‘General’ cards than anything else in the box. I will have to fix that before I send it.

This is the top and sides of my box. What do you think? Is this something you think you could make up yourself? I don’t really have any cards on my blog to share with you, but if you’re looking for some ideas, my friend Karlenn has a great gift for card making. You can check out her blog for some inspiration.

I hope you will come over to Fearlessly Creative Mammas and see what else I’ve been working on. There are a lot of great things coming up and this month we also have a giveaway for 2 $500 Pay Pal prizes. Come over and enter.
